The square that anchors every Munich visit — neo-gothic Town Hall on the north side, the column to the Virgin Mary in the centre, every street radiating out to a famous landmark. The Glockenspiel performs at 11am, 12pm and 5pm — corny but worth catching once. The square itself shoots best at sunrise, when the Rathaus facade catches first light and there's almost no one around. For the elevated photo, take the lift up the Rathaus tower — €6.50, opens at 10am. Walk five minutes south for Viktualienmarkt, two minutes west for the Frauenkirche, two minutes north for the Munich Residence and Maximilianstraße.
