The two onion-domed brick towers that define Munich's skyline — visible from almost every street in the centre. Inside, the cathedral is starkly beautiful: soaring white pillars, restrained Gothic, no overdone gold. Free to enter, closed during services. Look for the "Devil's Footprint" near the entrance, a black mark in the floor with a charming legend (the spot from which the Devil supposedly couldn't see the church's windows). The South Tower is open for climbing in season — book online, around €7. Quietest just after the 8am opening. From here, two minutes' walk south puts you back at Marienplatz.
