Less famous than Tegernsee, prettier and quieter. Surrounded by gentle peaks. The 7km lake-loop walk takes 90 minutes at a gentle pace, with several cafés and benches along the way. The lakeside chapel and the Bauer in der Au beer garden on the eastern shore are good lunch stops. Pedal-boat rental at the north end, around €15/hour. Direct train from Munich Hauptbahnhof takes around 1 hour, no car needed for a day trip. Useful as a quick stop on the drive between Schloss Elmau and Berchtesgaden — the church on the lake's north shore is a 10-minute photo break.
