One of the Best Viewpoints Over Lake Garda
Perched high above the northern shores of Lake Garda, Rifugio San Pietro is one of my favorite viewpoints in the area. Located on Monte Calino near Tenno, this mountain refuge sits on a natural terrace overlooking the lake and offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in Garda Trentino.
What makes this place special is the combination of easy access and incredible scenery. Unlike many viewpoints that require a long hike, you can reach Rifugio San Pietro with a relatively short walk or even drive close to the refuge, making it accessible to almost everyone.
Why Visit?
The main reason to come here is the view.
From the terrace, you'll enjoy:
panoramic views over northern Lake Garda;
Monte Baldo rising on the opposite side of the lake;
the towns of Riva del Garda and Torbole below;
dramatic cliffs and mountain scenery surrounding the lake.
On a clear day, the view stretches far across the entire northern basin of Lake Garda. The location truly feels like a balcony suspended above the lake.
The Church of San Pietro
Right next to the refuge stands the small Church of San Pietro, a historic chapel that has existed here for centuries. The refuge itself was originally connected to an old hermitage, which adds a unique historical atmosphere to the location.
Food & Atmosphere
The refuge serves traditional Trentino cuisine and is a great place to stop for lunch while enjoying the view.
However, for me the biggest highlight isn't the food — it's sitting on the terrace and watching the landscape below. Few places around Lake Garda offer such a rewarding combination of scenery and atmosphere.
Hiking Options
If you enjoy hiking, Rifugio San Pietro can be reached via several scenic trails from:
Tenno;
Canale di Tenno;
Lago di Tenno.
One of the most popular routes starts from the beautiful medieval village of Canale di Tenno and combines the refuge with a visit to Lake Tenno.
Photography Tips
Sunset is by far the most magical time to visit.
As the sun drops behind the mountains, the warm light illuminates the cliffs and the northern part of Lake Garda. The view becomes even more impressive when dramatic clouds move through the valley.
This is one of the few places around Lake Garda where I always recommend staying a little longer than planned.
Important Tips
Sunset offers the best atmosphere and photography conditions
If you plan to eat at the refuge, booking ahead is recommended
Bring a light jacket even during summer evenings
Combine this stop with Canale di Tenno and Lago di Tenno
Don't rush — the terrace is the real attraction here
Rifugio San Pietro is one of those places that perfectly demonstrates why the northern part of Lake Garda is so special. The combination of mountain scenery, history, and panoramic views makes it one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the entire region.
