St. Johann in Ranui is probably one of the most recognizable churches in the entire Dolomites. Located in the peaceful Val di Funes valley, this tiny baroque church surrounded by green meadows with the dramatic Odle/Geisler peaks rising behind it has become one of the classic postcard views of South Tyrol.

Even though the church itself is small, the combination of traditional alpine scenery, rolling fields, and sharp Dolomite peaks creates one of the most beautiful photography compositions in the region.

Getting There & Parking

The church is very easy to access and requires only a short walk from the parking area.

There is an official panoramic viewpoint created specifically for visitors, so you can enjoy the famous view without entering private fields.

Best Time for Photography

This location is all about light.

The most magical moments are:

  • sunrise with a peaceful atmosphere;

  • sunset when the Geisler peaks catch warm alpine light;

  • autumn when the valley becomes golden;

  • after fresh snowfall for a winter fairytale scene.

Sunset is my favorite time here because the mountains behind the church can glow beautifully during the last light of the day.

Important: Respect Private Property

The fields around St. Johann in Ranui belong to local farmers.

Please:

  • stay on official paths;

  • don’t walk into meadows for photos;

  • respect fences and signs.

The landscape looks beautiful because local farmers maintain it, and protecting these areas helps keep them accessible for everyone.

Important Tips

  • Bring a zoom lens if you want the famous compressed mountain background

  • Sunrise is best for avoiding crowds

  • Sunset usually gives the most dramatic light

  • Combine this spot with Santa Maddalena viewpoint nearby

  • Don’t rush — Val di Funes is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Dolomites

St. Johann in Ranui is definitely a popular location, but it became famous for a reason. With the right light and a little patience, it’s still one of the most magical scenes you can experience in South Tyrol.
