Known as the "Rainbow Lake" (Lech de l'ercaboan in Ladin), Carezza is a protected natural monument. It is famously described by the European Commission as the place "...where the Dolomites look at themselves in the mirror."

📸 Photography & Water Conditions

  • The Mirror Effect: For the best reflections of the Latemar and Rosengarten peaks, you need calm water (wind speed < 5km/h). Try arriving at sunrise or sunset for still air and golden light.

  • Dimensions: The lake is approximately 300 meters long and 140 meters wide.

  • Depth & Source: Its depth reaches up to 22 meters. It is fed by underground springs from the Latemar mountains, which is why its size and depth change significantly with the seasons.

🥾 Hiking & Access On Foot

The area offers various trails, from easy strolls to village-to-lake connections.

Key Trails:

  1. Lake Carezza Loop: An easy, flat 20-30 minute walk around the shore.

  2. The Suspension Bridge: A scenic detour to a spectacular bridge over the feeding stream.

🚗 Logistics & Parking

  • Parking Fees (Main Lot): * Cars: €2 per hour.

    • Campervans: €9 (up to 3h) / €18 (3-12h) / €30 (12-24h).

  • Alternative Parking (P2 & P3): Recommended during peak season or for cheaper car rates.

🏛️ Interesting Facts & History

  • Famous Visitors: The lake’s beauty has historically attracted prominent figures, including Winston Churchilland Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) of Austria-Hungary.

  • The Bronze Nymph: A statue of the nymph Ondina is perched on a rock in the middle of the lake. According to legend, she was the target of a sorcerer's failed rainbow trap. Note: She only becomes fully visible when the water level is low.

  • Underground Access: Always use the pedestrian tunnel from the parking lot to safely reach the viewing platforms without crossing the highway.

💡 Pro Tips

  1. Strict Protection: Do not cross the wooden railings. Touching the water or walking on the shore is strictly prohibited to preserve the lake’s unique ecosystem.

  2. Storm Vaia Legacy: The clearing of trees caused by the 2018 storm has actually created wider, unobstructed panoramic views of the Latemar massif that were previously hidden.
