Lago delle Baste is one of my favorite hidden spots near Passo Giau — especially during sunset, when the entire landscape starts glowing with warm alpine light. While the small lake itself is beautiful, the real magic is the journey getting there. The entire trail is filled with incredible viewpoints, dramatic mountain scenery, and endless photography opportunities.

Photography Tips
This place is incredible for photography, especially:
during sunset;
after rainfall;
and on calm windless evenings.
If you want perfect reflections in the water, try to visit on a day with little or no wind. When the surface becomes completely still, the reflections of the surrounding peaks look absolutely unreal.
The trail itself is just as photogenic as the final destination, so don’t rush the hike — there are beautiful spots almost everywhere along the route.
Important Tips
Bring a jacket even during summer evenings
Temperatures drop quickly after sunset
A headlamp is highly recommended if hiking back in the dark
Weather changes rapidly in the mountains
Sunset is by far the best time to experience this area
Lago delle Baste is one of those places where the entire experience matters more than the destination itself. The peaceful atmosphere, dramatic Dolomite scenery, and unforgettable sunset light make it one of the most magical hikes near Passo Giau.
