Located directly beneath the dramatic Odle peaks, Geisleralm is one of the most scenic mountain huts in the Dolomites. Surrounded by alpine meadows and panoramic mountain views, it's the perfect place to relax after the hike from Zanser Alm.
The Hike
From Zanser Alm, the hike takes approximately:
1.5–2 hours
Easy to moderate difficulty
The trail is well maintained and offers beautiful scenery throughout the entire route.
Parking & Access
The hike starts from the Zanser Alm parking area.
Important:
Parking is paid (€10/day)
Online reservations are available and highly recommended
Parking spaces are limited
Before driving to Zans, check the traffic light system here:
🟢 Green → You can drive to Zans and buy a parking ticket on-site.
🔴 Red → Parking is full and access is only possible with a pre-booked online reservation.
Alternative parking is available in St. Magdalena (Ranui, Putzen, Filler parking areas), with bus line 330 running regularly to Zanser Alm.
Campervans are also allowed at Zanser Alm.
Why Visit Geisleralm?
The main highlights are:
breathtaking views of the Odle mountains;
traditional South Tyrolean food;
peaceful alpine atmosphere;
one of the best sunset locations in Val di Funes.
The Reflection Pond 📸
Just a few steps from the hut you'll find a small pond that often reflects the surrounding peaks when conditions are calm.
This is one of my favorite photography spots in the entire valley.
Nearby there is also a fountain with fresh mountain spring water where you can refill your bottle after the hike.
My Personal Tip
Don't leave immediately if the mountains are hidden by clouds.
I've been here several times, and some of my best experiences happened when the peaks were completely covered for hours. More than once, the clouds suddenly opened for only a few minutes, revealing the mountains in perfect light.
If the weather looks bad, be patient. Grab a drink, sit near the pond, and enjoy the atmosphere. Sometimes Geisleralm rewards those who wait.
Food & Atmosphere
The hut serves traditional South Tyrolean dishes and is a great place to take a longer break before hiking back down.
However, for me the real highlight is not the food but the location itself. Sitting on the terrace with the Odle peaks directly in front of you is an experience you'll remember long after the hike.
Important Tips
Bring enough water for the hike
Refill your bottle at the mountain spring
Temperatures drop quickly after sunset
Allow extra time for photography around the pond
Sunset is the most beautiful time to visit
Cloudy days can still produce incredible conditions if you're patient
Geisleralm is much more than a mountain hut. Between the incredible scenery, peaceful atmosphere, reflection pond, and unforgettable sunset views, it remains one of my favorite places in the entire Dolomites.
