The Panorama of Sankt Magdalena is one of the most iconic viewpoints in Val di Funes and one of the most beautiful mountain views in the Dolomites. From here, you get the famous postcard perspective of the small alpine village surrounded by green meadows, with the dramatic Odle/Geisler peaks rising in the background.
This is the place where everything comes together — traditional South Tyrolean houses, peaceful countryside, and some of the most impressive mountain scenery in Italy.
Getting There
The viewpoint is located above the village of Sankt Magdalena and can be reached by a short uphill walk.
Parking option 1
Parking option 2
From the village, follow the trail uphill toward the panoramic viewpoint.
Hiking information:
Walking time: ~30–60 minutes depending on your starting point
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Elevation gain: Short uphill section
The walk itself is already part of the experience, with beautiful views opening up along the way.
Best Time for Photography
Sunset is by far the most magical moment here.
During golden hour:
the Odle peaks catch the last sunlight;
the mountains can turn orange and pink;
the village below starts glowing;
and the entire valley feels incredibly peaceful.
This is one of my favorite sunset locations in the Dolomites.
Photography Tips
The classic shot is the village of Sankt Magdalena with the huge mountains compressed behind it.
For the best results:
use a zoom lens to make the peaks appear larger;
arrive before sunset to choose your composition;
stay after sunset because the colors often become even better.
The atmosphere changes every few minutes as the light moves across the mountains.
Important Tips
Bring a jacket — evenings get cold quickly
A tripod is useful for sunset photography
Don’t enter private meadows for photos
Stay on official paths
Combine this viewpoint with St. Johann in Ranui Church nearby
Even though this is one of the most photographed views in the Dolomites, experiencing the sunset here in person is something completely different. The peaceful valley, glowing peaks, and classic alpine scenery make it one of the most unforgettable places in South Tyrol.
