Lago d’Anterselva is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in South Tyrol, surrounded by dense forests, crystal-clear mountain water, and dramatic peaks of the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park. Located close to the Austrian border at an altitude of 1,642 meters, this lake offers a much quieter and more peaceful atmosphere compared to the most famous Dolomite lakes.

Unlike Lago di Braies, which became extremely crowded in recent years, Lago d’Anterselva still feels more natural and relaxing. It’s the perfect place for an easy walk, photography, or simply enjoying the peaceful alpine scenery.

What Makes It Special

The beauty of Lago d’Anterselva comes from its simplicity:

  • emerald-blue alpine water;

  • mountain reflections;

  • untouched forests;

  • peaceful walking paths;

  • and incredible views of the surrounding peaks.

The lake changes completely depending on weather conditions — sunny days reveal bright turquoise colors, while cloudy mornings create a mysterious and dramatic mountain atmosphere.

Hiking information:

  • Distance: ~3.5 km loop

  • Duration: ~1 hour

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Suitable for families

The path takes you through forests, small viewpoints, wooden bridges, and quiet corners around the lake.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning is the most magical time:

  • almost no people;

  • calm water reflections;

  • soft mountain light;

  • peaceful atmosphere.

Autumn is especially beautiful when the surrounding forests turn golden and create amazing contrast with the blue water.

Summer is perfect for walking and relaxing, but arriving early is recommended.

Photography Tips

Lago d’Anterselva is a fantastic photography location because the scenery changes constantly.

Best conditions:

  • sunrise;

  • calm windless mornings;

  • autumn colors;

  • fresh snow on surrounding peaks.

For perfect reflections, choose a day with little wind when the lake surface becomes completely still.

Parking & Access

The lake is easily accessible by car, which makes it a great stop during a Dolomites road trip.

Parking is located close to the lake.

During peak summer periods, parking can fill up quickly, so arriving earlier gives you a much better experience.

Important Tips

  • Bring a jacket even in summer — temperatures are cooler at this altitude

  • Comfortable shoes are recommended for the lake loop

  • Don’t skip the full walk around the lake

  • Perfect alternative if you want a quieter experience than Lago di Braies

  • Combine it with nearby mountain passes or other South Tyrol locations

Lago d’Anterselva is one of those places where you don’t need a difficult hike to experience the beauty of the Dolomites. Peaceful, scenic, and surrounded by untouched nature — it’s one of the best easy-access lakes in South Tyrol.
