Passo delle Erbe is one of the most beautiful and underrated mountain passes in the Dolomites. Located between Val Badia and Val di Funes, it offers wide alpine meadows, spectacular mountain scenery, and incredible views of the iconic Peitlerkofel (Sass de Putia).
Unlike some of the more famous Dolomite passes, Passo delle Erbe feels much quieter and less crowded, making it a fantastic place for photography, hiking, or simply enjoying the landscape.
Why Visit Passo delle Erbe?
The area offers:
panoramic mountain views in every direction;
beautiful alpine meadows;
excellent hiking opportunities;
incredible sunrise and sunset conditions;
and some of the most photogenic landscapes in the Dolomites.
One of the most famous photography spots here features twisted tree roots in the foreground with Peitlerkofel rising in the background. It's only a short walk from the parking area and definitely worth a quick stop.
Best Time to Visit
Passo delle Erbe is beautiful throughout the day, but sunrise and sunset are particularly magical.
During golden hour:
the alpine meadows glow with warm colors;
Peitlerkofel catches beautiful side light;
and the entire landscape becomes even more dramatic.
Autumn is especially beautiful when the surrounding vegetation begins changing color.
Hiking Opportunities
Passo delle Erbe is one of the best hiking hubs in this part of the Dolomites.
1. Sasso Putia Circular Hike
The most popular route is the circular hike around Peitlerkofel (Sass de Putia), offering breathtaking views throughout the entire walk.
If you only want to complete the circular hike, you can skip the summit section.
2. Peitlerkofel Summit
For more experienced hikers, it is also possible to continue to the summit of Peitlerkofel, where you'll be rewarded with one of the best panoramas in the region.
3. Easy Alternative Walk
If you're not in the mood for a longer hike, simply walk toward Fornella Alm. From there, you can continue either left or right along the trail for about 1 km and enjoy incredible views without committing to a full-day hike.
This is a great option for:
families;
photographers;
sunset walks;
or travelers with limited time.
Photography Tips
Passo delle Erbe is one of those places where you don't need a specific destination. Some of my favorite photos here were taken simply by wandering around and exploring the area.
Look for:
alpine meadows;
isolated trees;
dramatic cloud formations;
mountain reflections after rain;
and classic views toward Peitlerkofel.
Important Tips
Bring a jacket even during summer
Weather changes quickly at this altitude
Sunrise and sunset offer the best light
Allow extra time to explore beyond the main viewpoints
Combine Passo delle Erbe with nearby locations in Val di Funes or Val Badia
Whether you're a photographer, hiker, or road-trip traveler, Passo delle Erbe is one of those places that perfectly represents the beauty of the Dolomites and deserves much more than a quick photo stop.
