Seceda is arguably one of the most recognizable locations in the entire Dolomites. The dramatic ridgeline overlooking Val Gardena (Gröden), combined with panoramic views stretching across countless mountain peaks, creates one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Alps.
If it's your first trip to the Dolomites, Seceda is one of those places you simply shouldn't miss.
How to Get to Seceda
🚠 Option 1: By Cable Car (Recommended)
The easiest and fastest way to reach Seceda is by taking the cable car from Ortisei (St. Ulrich).
Cable car station is located here.
There are several parking areas near the station.
Current schedules and prices
Once you reach the upper station, you can either:
enjoy a short panoramic walk;

Best Time to Visit
🌿 Summer (Late June – August)
The most popular season.
You'll find:
green alpine meadows;
fully accessible trails;
blooming wildflowers;
mountain huts open for the season.
Keep in mind that July and August can be very crowded, especially around midday.
🍂 Autumn (September – Early October)
My favorite time to visit.
The weather is often stable, the visibility is excellent, temperatures are perfect for hiking, and there are usually fewer visitors than during peak summer.
❄️ Winter & Spring (November – May)
Seceda transforms into a ski destination during winter.
While the scenery is beautiful, most hiking routes are inaccessible due to snow cover. If your goal is hiking rather than skiing, it's generally better to visit between late June and early October.
Sunrise at Seceda
Seceda is famous for sunrise photography, but reaching the viewpoint before sunrise requires some planning.
The cable car does not operate early enough for sunrise, which leaves two options:
stay overnight in one of the mountain huts;
hike up before dawn.
The hike typically takes around 3–4 hours depending on your starting point and pace.
If you decide to hike for sunrise, the Col Raiser route is one of the most practical options.

Photography Tips
The famous ridgeline is the main attraction, but don't stop at the first viewpoint.
Once you arrive at the upper station, I recommend walking toward the Seceda Cross and then continuing along the ridgeline. Some of the best views are found just a little farther away from the main crowds.

The further you walk along the ridge, the more opportunities you'll find for unique compositions and panoramic views.
Can You Camp on Seceda?
Wild camping is officially prohibited throughout the Dolomites.
Although you may occasionally see tents or people spending the night outdoors, camping can result in fines if you're caught.
If you want to experience sunrise without a predawn hike, staying overnight in a mountain hut is by far the best option.
Mountain Huts & Accommodation
Accommodation options near Seceda include:
If you're planning to stay overnight during summer or early autumn, book as early as possible. Accommodation around Seceda is extremely popular and can sell out weeks or even months in advance.
Important Tips
Visit early or late in the day to avoid the biggest crowds
Allow extra time to explore beyond the main viewpoint
Bring layers — weather changes quickly at altitude
Reserve accommodation well in advance if staying overnight
Don't stop at the cable car station; the best views are found along the ridgeline
Seceda is one of those rare places that genuinely exceeds expectations. No matter how many photos you've seen beforehand, standing on the ridgeline and looking across the Dolomites is an experience that's difficult to forget.
