One of the most breathtaking lakes in the Dolomites, Sorapis Lake is famous for its unreal turquoise water surrounded by dramatic alpine peaks. I’ve visited it myself, and despite becoming extremely popular in recent years, it still remains one of the most unforgettable hikes in the region — especially during sunset when the mountains reflect beautifully on the lake.
Hiking Information
Starting point: Passo Tre Croci
Hiking time: ~2–3 hours one way
Elevation gain: ~400 m
Difficulty: Moderate
The trail is well-marked, but some sections are narrow and exposed, so proper shoes and caution are highly recommended — especially if you are uncomfortable with heights.

What Makes It Special
The lake’s incredible turquoise color comes from glacial minerals in the water, creating one of the most surreal landscapes in the Dolomites. It’s an amazing location for photography, especially during sunrise or sunset when the light becomes softer and the crowds disappear.
Swimming
Swimming is no longer allowed due to environmental protection measures. Even without entering the water, the scenery alone makes the hike absolutely worth it.
Rifugio Alfonso Vandelli
Near the lake you’ll find Rifugio Alfonso Vandelli, where you can get drinks and simple food. However, the menu is very basic, so bringing your own snacks or picnic is highly recommended — especially for sunset hikes.
The rifugio also offers simple mountain accommodation with bunk beds if you want to stay overnight and experience the lake during sunrise or sunset.

Crowds & Best Time to Visit
Sorapis Lake has become one of the most popular hikes in the Dolomites, and the trail gets extremely busy during summer days.
For the best experience:

This makes a huge difference both for the atmosphere and photography conditions.
Parking
Parking is available at Passo Tre Croci, but spaces fill up quickly during peak season. Arriving early is strongly recommended.
Important Tips
Bring enough water and snacks
Wear proper hiking shoes
Don’t forget a headlamp if hiking down after sunset
Weather changes quickly in the mountains
Sunrise and sunset offer the best atmosphere by far
Despite the crowds, Sorapis Lake remains one of the most spectacular places in the Dolomites and absolutely deserves a spot on any Northern Italy itinerary.
