Thunder Creek Falls is a perfect quick stop on State Highway 6 between Wanaka and Haast: you park at a small roadside carpark and follow a short, flat boardwalk through beech forest to a raised viewing platform, so it only takes about 10 minutes return and is easy for families and most mobility levels. Bring insect repellent for sandflies and a light waterproof layer because conditions change fast and the falls look best after rain when the flow is strong. There are limited facilities, so treat it as a brief nature detour with good photo opportunities rather than a long picnic destination.
