From the rhythm of the old mine, we drove into the heart of nature.
And of course, our destination was the Wilderness and Nature Center near Outokumpu, at Särkiselkä.
The area offers fantastic swimming beaches, a summer café, canoeing routes across 12 lakes, nature trails, a campsite—and excellent campfire spots! This time, our chosen nature destination was the Children’s Fishing Spot (Lasten kalakeidas).
The Fishing Oasis has great fire pits, a hut, a lean-to shelter, and absolutely wonderful, accessible outdoor spaces. And best of all: children under 12 can fish for free! This made our boys very happy—naturally, we had packed the fishing rods in the car.
While the boys were fishing and Kelsie napped, Jocelyn and I went berry picking in the forest. There were plenty of blueberries! But our picking came to an abrupt end when we heard from the shore:
"Come here now—I caught a fish!"
We ran to the beach, and sure enough, Eliel had caught a rainbow trout! It was a lively one, jumping all over the place. You can see in the video below whether it made it to the dinner table. 😊
Outokumpu’s Wilderness and Nature Center is truly a paradise for nature lovers.
There’s something for everyone—whether you’re looking for activities or just a place to relax.
We only share locations, where we have been exploring and visiting as a family of 10, you get very special things in our website!
