Climbing the Tower – One Last Look at the Mine

After a full day of exploring underground tunnels, peeking at sparkling gems, and letting the kids go wild in the incredible Children’s Mine playground, there was one final thing we had to do before leaving the Old Mine in Outokumpu:

Climb the mine tower.

We saved it for last — maybe on purpose, maybe because our legs had finally recovered from chasing kids between playhouses and pedal car tracks. But there it was, rising above the old industrial landscape, calling us for one last adventure before heading home.

The stairs twisted upward, winding around the metal framework. Step by step, we made our way up, our legs a little tired but our hearts still full of energy from the day. The kids raced ahead, of course — how do they always have more energy at the end of the day?

At the top, we paused. Wind in our hair. Silence above the buzz. And a view that stretched far beyond the old mine. Forests. Town rooftops. History and today, side by side. It felt like standing at the edge of something forgotten and something still very much alive.

As we stood there, looking out from the old mine tower, one of the kids said,
"I feel like I can see the whole adventure from up here."
And honestly? So did I.

It wasn’t just a climb. It was a final chapter to a day full of stories, laughter, and discoveries — in a place where history, imagination, and family fun come together in the most unexpected way.
