Caminito is an open air museum and tourist hot spot in the La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It is one of the few (only?) places in the city that can scream "tourist trap" but I encourage you to visit and to dig under the surface. The city was born here, as the majority of the city's immigrants arrived right here largely from Italy, Spain, and elsewhere.

The legend has it that as these poor family arrived with little money to their name, they painted their homes with leftover cans of paint from the ships in the harbor, giving it this patchy rainbow of colors you still see today.

If you have the time, go on an authentic tour like this to learn about the history of Caminito and La Boca, including a very brief two weeks when it was an independent republic!
