What Is It?

Heroes’ Square is Budapest's largest and most significant public square, famous for its imposing statues and deep historical meaning. It’s located at the entrance of City Park and is one of Budapest’s main landmarks, often used for national celebrations and events.

Key Features:

  • Millennium Monument: The centerpiece of the square is the Millennium Monument, built to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. It features:

    • A 36-meter tall column topped with the Archangel Gabriel, holding the Hungarian Holy Crown and the Apostolic Cross.

    • Statues of the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars, the leaders who founded Hungary, at the base of the column.

  • Statues of Historical Figures: On either side of the central column, there are two colonnades that house statues of important Hungarian kings, leaders, and national figures, including St. Stephen, King Matthias, and Lajos Kossuth.

  • Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: In front of the Millennium Monument, you’ll find a memorial for those who died for Hungary’s freedom.

Why Visit?

  • It’s a great place to snap some photos, soak in Hungary’s rich history, and admire impressive monumental architecture.

  • The square is flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hall of Art (Műcsarnok), two excellent cultural venues where you can dive deeper into Hungarian art and history.

Time Needed:

You can visit Heroes’ Square in about 20-30 minutes, but it’s also the gateway to City Park, so it’s a great starting point for a longer visit.
