Kahekili Highway (West Maui Loop)

The road to Hana gets all the glory on Maui, but the loop around west Maui is actually a much more hair raising drive and not nearly as many people come this way. You can drive as far as the Kahakuloa Head Overlook (and into Kahakuloa for Julia's Banana Bread) without too much trouble (the road is paved, two lanes, and has guard rails). But if you go past Kahakuloa, that's when things get really dicey (one lane stretches with pretty big drop offs). If you're driving clockwise around the mountain, you'll have the inside lane. If you're used to mountain driving, this probably won't phase you too much, but some people find it very dangerous. Either way, keep your site lines open and yield to cars coming the opposite way as they're on the outside lane. If you choose to go past Kahakuloa and "close the loop," you could hike the Waihe'e Ridge Trail and finish with a drink at Esthers Fair Prospect. Otherwise, turn around and head back to Kapalua after the blowhole or Kahakuloa.
