This trail hikes around Lago Ritom, a beautiful mountain lake in southern Switzerland.

It’s exciting just getting there, riding up the super steep funicular (87.8% grade). It doesn't get all the attention like Stoos and Gelmerbahn, but it's a fun ride.

The lake itself is a gorgeous deep blue, surrounded by dramatic mountains, rolling hills and forest. You could do a short day by hiking to the first lake and enjoying a picnic along the shore.

But we always hike up to the Capanna Cadagno mountain hut for lunch, which service simple traditional Ticino mountain food like polenta with stew.

The full loop passes through forests and meadows and by more little alpine lakes and a river. It's lovely green all summer with lots of wildflowers. In September, the fields turn golden brown, spotted with red blueberry bushes.
