The Zytglogge clock tower is perhaps the most famous landmark in the Bern old town. Built in the early 13th century, the tower initially served as a guard tower and prison.
Now the tower is best known for its intricate astronomical clock, with moving figures that perform a charming spectacle every hour.
The tower is located on the main street that cuts through center of the old town. See on map.
Guided clock tower tour
You can explore the inside of the tower on a guided tour, which allows you see inner workings of the clock, learn the history, and climb the 130 steps of the tower to get a unique view of the city.
The public tour is offered in the afternoon and lasts one hour. It's available in English.
