Location: Brunnistrasse 8, 8849 Alpthal

The snowshoe route is marked with pink poles and pink trail signs. Starting in Alpthal, follow signs to Furggelen and Furggelenstock. After the peak, follow signs to Holzegg, where you'll find the cable car.

SAFETY TIP⚠️When you reach the ridge at Furggelen, there is trail sign pointing to Furggelenstock, the peak. There is also a "Lavinengefahr" detour, direction Holzegg, that skips the peak in case of high avalanche danger. You can check avalanche risk levels on SwissTopo.

⏱️The posted time for this trail was 4h25. Our walking time was 2h30, but time on the trail was 5h30 with several breaks and lunch.

WHERE TO EAT

There are a few restaurants near the ski area, on the last third of the trail.

  • Alp Zwäcken - cute little hut with great views, simple menu. It's a couple mins detour off the snowshoe route.

  • Skihaus Holzegg - mountain restaurant with fantastic views of Lake and Grosser Mythen peak. Just 5 min walk to cable car.

  • Bergasthaus Holzegg - mountain restaurant directly at the cable car station. Large outdoor terrace and indoor seating.

HOW TO GET THERE

This hike starts at Brunni Alpthal in the valley, at the parking and bus stop. The trail ends at the Holzegg cable car, which you can ride down to your starting point. You could also hike in the opposite direction.

By public transport: Take a train to Einsiedeln, then bus 554 to Brunni SZ, Talstation LBH.
From Zürich 1h13

By car: Drive to Brunni Alpthal and park next to the Brunni Haggenegg ski area - Brunnistrasse 8, 8849 Alpthal. Remember to pay for the meter.

CABLE CAR

The trail ends at the Brunni-Holzweg cable car. You can ride this back to Brunni Alpthal where you started the hike.

The cable car runs daily, every 30 mins. Last ride down at 16:30.

You can purchase a one-way ticket at the cable car station (card or cash). No discount for any travel passes or cards.

The bus stop is right at the bottom of the cable car. It's about a 5 min walk to the parking where the trail started.

TRAIL VARIATIONS

For a slightly easier hike, you can start at Ibergeregg pass, hike up to Furggelen pass, then loop back on the winter trail to your starting point. It's the same distance, but less elevation gain. It's also cheaper, since you don't have to use the cable car. See trail map.

For a longer hike, you can add about 1 hour by adding a loop up to the Rotenflue before heading down to Holzegg.
