The Jungfraujoch "Top of Europe" is a spectacular viewpoint of famous peaks and the immense Aletsch glacier, the longest in the alps, over 20 km long.

To get there, a mountain train travels through a historic tunnel through the mountain to the highest rail station in Europe at 3,454m (11,332 ft). It's one the most popular tourist destinations in Switzerland and the most expensive.

Location: Grindelwald Terminal for Eiger Express cable car

Tickets: Jungfrau.ch

⚠️IMPORTANT: Seat reservations for the Jungfraubahn are now required from May to August. Reserve here.

Conditions: operating statusweatherwebcams

How to get there

You can travel there via Grindelwald (most common) or Lauterbrunnen.

From Grindelwald:

  1. Ride train to Grindelwald Terminal. From Interlaken 32 mins. From Lauterbrunnen, 35 mins.
By car: parking garage at Grundstrasse 54, 3818 Grindelwald.

  2. Ride Eiger Express cable car to Eigergletscher station.

  3. Transfer to Jungfraubahn mountain train and ride up to Jungfraujoch.

From Lauterbrunnen:

  1. From Lauterbrunnen train station, ride Wengernalp mountain train to Kleine Scheidegg.

  2. Transfer to Jungfraubahn mountain train and ride up to Jungfraujoch.

💡This outing is best done while staying in the Interlaken or Jungfrau Region area. But it can be done as a day trip from Zurich or Lucerne. Book a guided tour.

Tickets

We suggest purchasing via Jungfrau.ch, which will include the required seat reservation. This is an expensive outing, at over CHF 200/person (price varies by season).

You will need to choose:

  • starting point, e.g. Grindelwald Terminal, Lauterbrunnen, Interlaken, etc.

  • date & departure time

  • length of stay at the top (we suggest 1.5 to 2 hours, longer if you have lunch up there)

  • reductions - travel passes that give you a discount like Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card

Discounts: Swiss Travel Pass, Jungfrau Travel Pass, Berner Oberland Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, GA, Eurail, Interrail

What to do there

You visit includes a variety of viewpoints and attractions, in this order:

  1. Sphinx Terrace - elevator to highest viewpoint with outdoor observation deck

  2. Snow Fun Park - sledding, a small ski hill, and a zipline. You can rent the equipment on-site. (May to Oct only, extra fee)

  3. Mönchs Hut - snow hike to mountain hut for lunch, 90 mins round trip (Apr to Oct only)

  4. Alpine Sensation - multimedia presentation of the history of Jungfrau Railway construction

  5. Ice Palace - walk through tunnel cut through glacier ice with interesting ice sculptures

  6. Glacier Plateau - walk on glacier snow and closer view of famous peaks

  7. Gift shops & restaurants

Is it worth it?

It is very beautiful and a special experience and most people love it. But because of the high price, I think most travelers are better off spending their budget on other mountains activity in the Jungfrau Region, which are much less expensive and still very beautiful.
