Perched above the town of Fernie in the Cedar Valley, Island Lake Lodge is one of the most storied mountain retreats in Canada — and it earns that reputation in every season. The 8 km drive up through ancient old-growth cedar forest alone sets the tone for what awaits at the top.

In winter, Island Lake runs one of the most celebrated cat skiing operations in the world. Over 7,000 acres of private terrain across the Lizard Range, Mount Baldy, and Mount Fernie — blanketed in an average of 13 metres of snow each season — make for the kind of deep powder days that serious skiers dream about. Packages are all-inclusive, capped at just 36 guests, and sell out every single year. If you're not already on the waiting list, you're late. It's expert terrain through and through, and not a place for beginners to find their feet.

For most visitors, though, Island Lake is a summer destination. The Bear Bistro is the draw — a casual, sun-drenched patio serving up locally inspired food and cold drinks with one of the best views in the Fernie area. The kitchen leans into the landscape beautifully, with foraged mushrooms, huckleberries, and hints of fireweed making regular appearances on the plate. Check the operations calendar before you go, as the bistro runs select days and is subject to private function closures.

Beyond lunch, the trail network around the lodge is excellent. The Old Growth Trail and Lake & Fir Loop are lovely, accessible options for families, while the Mount Baldy Loop delivers a proper alpine reward for those willing to climb for it. Mountain biking, fly fishing, canoeing on the lake, and a full-service spa round out the experience.
