Tucked away on the quiet western edge of Yoho National Park, Wapta Falls is one of the most rewarding easy stops on any road trip between Banff and Golden. While it may not have the towering height of Takakkaw Falls further into the park, Wapta makes up for it in sheer volume and raw power — stretching nearly 150 metres wide across the full breadth of the Kicking Horse River, it's the largest waterfall by volume in Yoho, and the thundering roar and mist at its base leave a lasting impression.
The trail is short and straightforward — roughly 2.2 km one way through quiet montane forest with minimal elevation change, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The upper viewpoint offers a solid look at the falls, but it's worth continuing down the steep switchbacks to the gravel beach at the river's edge for the full experience. In late summer, when water levels drop, it's possible to wade across the rocky riverbed for an even more dramatic vantage point — respect the power of the Kicking Horse and don't attempt it during high water.
One practical note for westbound drivers: the Wapta Falls Road turnoff is not signed on the westbound Trans-Canada, so watch carefully and note that if you've already left Yoho National Park, you've gone too far.
