Rucu Pichincha Volcano is a challenging 9.5 kms out and back trail near Quito. The route typically takes 6 hours roundtrip, and requires hill fitness for those interested in tackling the trail. With an elevation of 4698m, it is one of the highest peaks in the mountains of the Pichincha Volcano. Along the way hikers can enjoy spectacular views of Quito surrounded by native nature. The end goal of the hike is this the summit, which is a scramble up the mountain and can be challenging with sections of the trail being very slippery when wet. There are two options, one more difficult that requires extensive rock climbing experience and equipment. You can also alternatively do the Ruta Integral de Los Pichinchas which goes through all the four peaks of the Pichincha Volcano. That takes around 8 hours and let's you have an amazing view of the Avenue of Volcanoes, if the sky is clear.
