🔎Overview

  • Location: Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

  • Trail Type: Out-and-back

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Distance: 5.5 km round trip

  • Elevation Gain: 330 m

  • Hiking Time: 2 - 2.5 hours total with return

  • Start Point: Pfingstegg (via cable car from Grindelwald)

  • Best Season: Mid-June to October

🏔️Highlights

  • Close-up views of the Unterer Grindelwaldgletscher

  • Well-marked alpine trail carved into the mountainside with crazy views down the valley

  • End destination: the cozy Berggasthaus Bäregg, located above the glacier gorge

  • Perfect half-day hike with absolutely epic scenery

🚗Getting There

  • Start in Grindelwald and ride the short Pfingsteggbahn cable car to Pfingstegg (1387 m above sealevel)

  • The trail begins right at the top station, clearly signposted toward Bäregg

  • Easily accessible via public transport from Interlaken

Trail Notes

  • The path winds gently uphill first through a forest and then through rocky terrain and alpine grasses, with panoramic views of the valley and glacier. The views on the glacier are so unique and it was so surprising to see the glacier coming closer!

  • Some narrow sections are protected with railings and chains — not technical, but a good head for heights is helpful

  • After about 1–1.25 hours of hiking, you arrive at Berggasthaus Bäregg (1773 m) — a small mountain inn with outdoor seating and glacier views. (There is even a cat at home at the Bäregghütte, so cute!)

  • Return the same way or stay for a meal, coffee, or homemade dessert at the guesthouse. There is also a possibility to sleep over at the hut. I recommend you book your stay online in advance. I tried to book it once last minute but it sadly wasn't available.

If you are an alpinist: From the Bäregg-Hütte a white-blue-white trail leads to the Schreckhornhütte. This is absolutely on my bucket list, though people told me it'squite an adventure to get there and as the white-blue-white trail suggests, involves some climbing.
