If it’s your first trip and you want something different from the city centre, this is one of Rome’s most fascinating experiences. The catacombs show a completely different side of Rome beneath the city, and a guided tour is required to enter. The atmosphere is quiet, cool, and slightly eerie but very memorable. Most tours include transport which makes it easier.

Opening Time: Usually 9am–5pm (closed some weekdays depending on site)

How much time: 1.5–2 hours

Best time: Morning (cooler + less crowded)

Tip: Bring a light layer as it’s cool underground.
