The Birnam Oak is a legendary tree that plays a role in Shakespeare's Macbeth. It's believed to be one of the last survivors of the ancient forest that once covered the area. With its gnarled branches and hollow trunk, this oak has stood the test of time and is truly a sight to behold up close.

Visiting the tree is part of an amazing woodland trail that features other 'giants' of the forest including 'the Young Pretender' - a giant sycamore tree. The path to the trees is easy to access from just beside the bridge on the far side of the town (the opposite side to the shops) and is well worth doing if you are in the area. You can even follow the path to do a loop that leads you back into Birnham.
