If you’re looking for something different on the eastern side of El Salvador, Laguna de Olomega is a good option for you 🙌.
Located between San Miguel and La Unión, Olomega is the largest freshwater body in eastern El Salvador, stretching over 24 square kilometers. Within the lagoon you’ll spot Isla Olomega and Isla Olomeguita, along with several smaller islets that give the landscape a peaceful, almost untouched feeling.
In 2010, it was declared a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, which makes sense once you see the biodiversity here. The flora and fauna are rich, the birdlife is impressive, and the scenery feels expansive and open.
If you’re up for a bit more adventure, you can hike nearby hills like Nariz del Diablo, La Chirinaca, or La Garrocha. From up there, the views over the lagoon seems to be absolutely worth it 😍
Personally we have not yet been here, but what we have heard from social media and our research, it is high on our list 🙌
