El Boquerón is one of the easiest volcanoes to visit in San Salvador. It’s just a short drive from the city, but once you’re up there, you can see it is totally different environment.
At the top, you’ll find El Boquerón National Park, located right inside the crater of the San Salvador volcano. It’s a protected area, so you can easily feel it more calm, clean and preserved area.
The hike itself is very accessible and suitable for most people. The main trail takes around 20–25 minutes and leads you to the famous crater viewpoint. Along the way, there are a few lookout spots with slightly different angles. From the top, you’ll see El Boqueroncito, that is a smaller crater rising from inside the main one and along with the surrounding slopes where locals grow flowers and produce in the cooler climate.
Even if you don’t go into the park, the area is still worth visiting. The road up is lined with cafés, restaurants, and viewpoints overlooking San Salvador, Lake Ilopango, and on a clear day, even the Chinchontepec volcano. It’s the kind of place where you stop for a coffee and end up staying much longer than planned.
