This is the historic heart of Belgrade 🏰
The fortress has stood at the meeting point of the Sava and Danube rivers for centuries and has been controlled, rebuilt, and fought over by numerous empires, including the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Habsburgs. Today, it combines a historic fortress with one of the city's most beloved public parks.
What we loved most is that it feels equally popular with locals and visitors without feeling overwhelmed by tourism. People come here to walk, exercise, meet friends, watch the sunset, or simply spend time outdoors.
The area is huge, and you could easily spend several hours wandering around without a plan. There are countless benches, viewpoints, pathways, and corners to discover. For us, the absolute highlight was watching the sunset from the fortress walls overlooking the rivers and New Belgrade. The views are some of the best in the city.
Our recommendation is simple: pick up something to eat, bring it here for a picnic, find a bench or a spot on the fortress walls, and take your time. Some of our favorite moments in Belgrade were spent doing exactly that 🥹
