Location:

Fossil Cliffs are located on Maria Island, part of Maria Island National Park off Tasmania’s east coast. The cliffs feature dramatic limestone formations rich with marine fossils — clams, corals, scallops, and sea lilies — dating back around 300 million years. The cliffs are near the historic settlement of Darlington, where old lime kilns and cement works remnants can also be seen.

How to get there:

The only way to reach Maria Island is by passenger ferry from Triabunna. From Triabunna, the ferry crosses to Darlington, the main settlement on the island. From Darlington, follow the well-marked walking or cycling trail to the Fossil Cliffs. The walk is part of a 4.5 km circuit (about 2.5 hours walking) and includes some uneven surfaces and short steep sections.

Hike length:

Approximately 4.5 km circuit, taking 2–2.5 hours return from Darlington.

Difficulty Level:

Moderate — the trail has uneven surfaces, some steps, and a short steep section down to the fossil viewing platform. A basic level of fitness is recommended.

Dogs allowed:

No — dogs are not permitted in Maria Island National Park.

More information:

The Fossil Cliffs are a remarkable window into Tasmania’s geological past. A short steep track leads onto a rock shelf where you can see fossils embedded in the limestone. Along the way, you’ll pass historic ruins from the 19th-century lime works and enjoy views over Darlington and the surrounding coastline.
