Location:
Forth Falls is located near the small town of Wilmot in north-west Tasmania, about 40 minutes from Devonport and roughly an hour from Cradle Mountain. Access is via West Kentish Road and then Wilmot Road, turning onto a short gravel section that leads to the informal trailhead. The roads are mostly sealed and easy to access for all vehicles, with only a brief unsealed stretch at the end.
Hike length:
Around 2–3 km return depending on how far you explore, taking roughly 45–90 minutes. The walk includes access to viewpoints of both Upper Forth Falls and Lower Forth Falls, with the lower falls requiring extra caution and time.
Difficulty Level:
Moderate — the track is unofficial and can be uneven, muddy and slippery after rain. The descent toward Lower Forth Falls is steeper, with roots, rocks and loose ground, making it suitable for confident walkers. The upper viewpoint is easier to reach and suitable for most visitors who are comfortable on bush tracks.
Dogs allowed:
No, dogs are not permitted.
More information:
The track begins along an informal bush path that quickly leads you into beautiful fern-filled forest with moss-covered banks and the sound of rushing water nearby. The trail isn’t an official Parks track, but it is generally easy enough to follow once you’re on it, with a worn footpath guiding you through the trees toward the river.
After a short walk, you’ll reach the area overlooking Upper Forth Falls, where the water plunges through a narrow rocky chute surrounded by dense, green forest. This section offers great photo opportunities and is the safest and easiest part of the walk.
From here, more adventurous walkers can continue toward Lower Forth Falls. This part of the track is steeper and can be slippery, especially after rain, with sections that require careful footing. The final viewpoint gives you a beautiful look at the wider, more dramatic lower cascade as it drops into a rugged gorge.
Although the base is difficult to access and often overgrown, the upper and lower viewpoints together make Forth Falls a fantastic hidden gem near Wilmot — perfect for those who enjoy quieter, lesser-known waterfall walks in Tasmania’s lush northwest rainforest.
