Location:
Cruickshanks Lookout is located in the Leven Canyon Reserve in north-west Tasmania, about 35 minutes from Ulverstone and 20 minutes from Nietta. The reserve is accessed via Leven Canyon Road, which is fully sealed and suitable for all vehicles.
How to get there:
From the Leven Canyon car park, follow the short, signed walking track toward the lookout circuit. Cruickshanks Lookout is the higher of the two main platforms, offering the most elevated view of the canyon. Most visitors head here first to avoid climbing the long staircase between the two lookouts — taking the loop anti-clockwise makes the walk easier.
Hike length:
Part of a 1.2 km loop, taking around 20–30 minutes return, including both Cruickshanks Lookout and the Edge Lookout.
Difficulty Level:
Easy to moderate — the track is well-formed, with some stairs. Walking the loop in the recommended direction (Cruickshanks first) makes it mostly downhill.
Dogs allowed:
Yes — dogs are permitted on a leash, as the reserve is not within a national park.
More information:
Cruickshanks Lookout provides the premier vantage point over the Leven Canyon. From the elevated platform, you’ll look down into the dramatic chasm carved by the Leven River, with sweeping views of rugged cliffs, deep forested slopes, and distant mountain peaks. The viewpoint is surrounded by cool temperate rainforest, adding to its peaceful and wild atmosphere.
This lookout is a must-see stop in the north-west, offering enormous scenery for minimal effort. It’s ideal as a short nature break, or combined with nearby attractions such as Leven Canyon Floor, Gunns Plains, or the Wilmot region.
