Location:
West Head is located on the north coast of Tasmania, within Narawntapu National Park, near Port Sorell and Bakers Beach. The headland offers panoramic views over Bass Strait, the surrounding coastal heathlands, and the park’s famous grasslands where wildlife roams freely. Access is via Narawntapu Road, with a short gravel section leading to the car park.
How to get there:
From Bakers Beach or Port Sorell, follow Narawntapu Road toward the West Head car park. From there, a short walking track leads to the elevated viewpoint. The path is well-formed and marked, providing easy access to the cliff-edge views.
Hike length:
Approximately 500 meters return, taking 10–15 minutes.
Difficulty Level:
Easy — the track is short, gently sloping, and suitable for most visitors, including families.
Dogs allowed:
No — dogs are not permitted inside Narawntapu National Park.
Entry cost / Park passes:
A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania’s national parks. For example:
A Daily Pass (up to 24 hours): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $47.70. A per‑person pass (travelling by bus, cycle or on foot) costs AUD $23.85.
• A Holiday Pass (up to 2 months): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $95.50. Per person (travelling by bus/cycle/foot) costs AUD $47.75.
This “holiday” option gives you access to all Tasmanian national parks for up to two months from the start date.

West Head offers breathtaking coastal and seascape views across Bass Strait, as well as over the park’s rolling grasslands that are home to kangaroos, wombats, and a variety of birdlife. The headland is particularly spectacular at sunrise and sunset, when the light casts a golden glow over the ocean and plains.
It is an ideal short walk to combine with other Narawntapu highlights, such as Archer’s Knob, Bakers Beach, and the park’s wildlife viewing areas. West Head is one of the most scenic vantage points in the park and perfect for a peaceful nature stop with minimal effort.
