Location:

Solomon’s Throne is one of the standout viewpoints within Walls of Jerusalem National Park, a remote alpine wilderness in Tasmania’s central highlands. Access begins at the Walls of Jerusalem car park on Mersey Forest Road, followed by a steep hike up to Trappers Hut and into the alpine plateau. From there, the well-marked main track leads you through the famed “Walls,” past idyllic tarns and dolerite peaks, with a side trail climbing to the summit of Solomon’s Throne.

Top 3 hikes near Solomon’s Throne:

  • Solomon's Throne Summit Track: This challenging 21 km return hike (7–9 hrs, ~900 m elevation gain, hard) takes you through Herod’s Gate and Lake Salome, past the beautiful Pencil Pine forest at Dixon’s Kingdom, and up a steep dolerite chute to reach Solomon’s Throne—rewarding you with incredible 360° alpine and plateau views.

  • Walls Circuit: A scenic 18 km return route (6–8 hrs, ~750 m elevation gain, moderate–hard) that leads you through the heart of the Walls, passing Wild Dog Creek, Herod’s Gate, and Lake Salome before reaching the ancient Pencil Pines around Dixon’s Kingdom, offering classic views without the summit scramble.

  • Zion Hill& Jaffa Gate Lookouts: This 14 km return hike (5–6 hrs, ~700 m elevation gain, moderate) offers easier side trips once inside the Walls, with elevated viewpoints over Lake Salome, the Temple, and surrounding tarns—perfect for photographers and hikers wanting stunning vistas without technical climbing.

Difficulty Level:

Moderate to Hard — The ascent into the Walls is steep and rocky, and the final climb up Solomon’s Throne involves scrambling up a narrow dolerite chute. Good fitness and sturdy footwear are essential. Weather can change rapidly at altitude, adding to the challenge.

More information:

Hiking to Solomon’s Throne feels like stepping into a hidden alpine world. The track leads you past ancient Pencil Pines, sparkling tarns, cushion plants, and vast high-country plains shaped by ice and time. Once inside the Walls, the amphitheatre of towering dolerite peaks creates a dramatic and almost surreal landscape.

Wildlife is plentiful, especially wallabies, possums, and birdlife adapted to the alpine environment. The solitude, crisp mountain air, and enormous sense of scale make this one of Tasmania’s most unforgettable wilderness experiences.

Whether you’re pushing for the summit, wandering past tranquil lakes, or camping under the stars at Dixon’s Kingdom, Solomon’s Throne offers a true taste of Tasmania’s raw and untouched alpine beauty.
