Location:

Wineglass Bay Lookout is located within Freycinet National Park on Tasmania’s east coast, near the town of Coles Bay. The lookout is part of the well-known Wineglass Bay Track, offering iconic views of the crescent-shaped bay and surrounding Hazards mountains. Access to the park requires an entry pass.

How to get there:

From Coles Bay, drive along Coles Bay Road to the Freycinet Visitor Centre. Park your car at the designated lot for the Wineglass Bay Track. From there, follow the clearly marked trail, which climbs steadily through eucalypt forest and coastal heath to the lookout.

Hike length:

Approximately 2.4 km return from the car park to the lookout, taking around 1–1.5 hours, depending on pace and time spent enjoying the view.

Difficulty Level:

Moderate — the track includes a steady uphill climb, uneven steps, and some rocky sections, but it is well-formed and manageable for walkers with reasonable fitness.

Dogs allowed:

No — dogs are not permitted inside Freycinet National Park.

Entry cost / Park passes:

A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania’s national parks. For example:

  • A Daily Pass (up to 24 hours): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $47.70. A per‑person pass (travelling by bus, cycle or on foot) costs AUD $23.85

• A Holiday Pass (up to 2 months): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $95.50. Per person (travelling by bus/cycle/foot) costs AUD $47.75
This “holiday” option gives you access to all Tasmanian national parks for up to two months from the start date.
Note: Prices may change, so it’s best to check the official site before you go.

More information:

Wineglass Bay Lookout is one of Tasmania’s most famous viewpoints. From the platform, you’ll see the perfectly curved white sandy bay, turquoise waters, and the rugged pink granite peaks of the Hazards. It’s a stunning spot for photography, wildlife spotting, or simply taking in the breathtaking coastal scenery.

For those seeking more adventure, the full Wineglass Bay Circuit continues from the lookout down to the bay itself, adding another 3 km return and the opportunity to walk along the pristine beach. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for calm waters and soft light, making the iconic shape of Wineglass Bay even more striking.
