Florida tourism was born here: glass-bottom boats have glided over these springs since the 1870s, and they still run daily — over caverns pouring out half a billion gallons a day, ancient dugout canoes, and manatees in the cool months. Six Tarzan films were shot on this water; so was Creature from the Black Lagoon's sequel work. Kayak the crystal run instead (clear kayaks in season — our linked tour) and keep an eye on the trees: the wild rhesus monkeys are descendants of a 1930s jungle-cruise operator's marketing stunt that permanently escaped. Cheap, historic, gorgeous, and half as crowded as springs with a tenth of its story. Click See more for tour info.
