Tbilisi's oldest residential neighbourhood is perfect for a slow spring afternoon walk, when the gardens and courtyards start to green up. Historically, this neighbourhood was threaded with narrow waterways and channels fed from the Mtatsminda slope, used to irrigate private gardens behind grand 19th-century houses. While most are no longer visible, the layout of the streets, plots and planted courtyards still reflects this garden-focused past.
