This hike along the red volcanic rock landscape is a completely different experience compared to other hikes on the island. The Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8) hike takes you along the scenic coast to the tip of the island, offering stunning views of Madeira’s volcanic cliffs above the rough Atlantic Ocean.

The trail is reasonably flat and easy all the way with an optional climb to the highest point at the end for even more breathtaking views. It covers a distance of around 6km, it takes around 2-3 hours to complete with plenty of viewpoints and lookouts along the way; we recommend starting this hike early, as the trail gets very busy and there is no shade from the midday sun.

As of January 1st 2025, Madeira requires tourists to pay a €3 hiking fee for recommended routes (PR trails), to help preserve the island's natural beauty and manage the growing number of tourists. if you do not pay you could be fined up to €50. Children under 12 and Madeira residents are exempt.
