Where d o I start with Ban Rak Thai? The incredible sunrises and sunsets, the super photogenic boats on the lake, the great food, the chinese atmosphere making you feel in another country, the fresh air of mountains, the chinese style hotels, etc etc.. In short: it's one of my favorite place in all Thailand! Ban Rak Thai is a small highland village with a beautiful lake set in a valley surrounded by hills and tea plantations. The village is famous for its magnificent views and tea cultivation. The village resembles some parts of China, and is still heavily influenced by Chinese culture today, as it was founded by former Kuo Min Tang soldiers who migrated from Yunnan Province. Don't be surprised to see the village dotted with signs written in Chinese.

First thing : Ban Rak Thai is not a hidden secret anymore, there will be a lot of tourists there, especially during winter, so make sure to book your hotel in advance. The most photogenic are Lee Wine Rak Thai resort (around 3,000 THB/night) and Chasa resort (around 2,500 THB during winter).

Second thing: Don't miss the incredible sunrise/sunset over the lake, either from the boat (300 THB/person), either from a viewpoint like the campsite, or the platform of Chasa resort or from a drone.

Third thing: take a walk around the lake during golden hour, either morning or afternoon, lots of nice photo opportunities and you can stop at one of the several coffee shops for some traditional tea or a beer ;)

Fourth thing : make sure you come in winter (november tofebruary) and bring warm clothes as it can go down to 3-4 degrees.

And last thing: don't miss the Yunnan cuisine in Lee Wine Ruk Thai Restaurant.
