At Oouo Shrine in Saga Prefecture, Japan, visitors can experienced an enchanted sight: the three vermilion gates, whose torii seem to float on the surface of the Ariake Sea. Depending on the tide, visitors can witness a beautiful sight when the gates are surrounded by water, or go up and explore the shore once the sea retreats. Additionally, there is a curious legend that serves as the legend for this mysterious sight. It involves a corrupt magistrate who was abandoned by worried locals on Okinoshima island. The people decided to rely on faith, and the magistrate managed to be rescued by a giant fish. As a sign of gratitude, he built the Ōuo Shrine with the torii gates extending toward Okinoshima. The shrine gates cause a remarkable sight every 30 years which visitors have been enjoying ever since.
