Located in Mino City, Gifu Prefecture, the Udatsu Wall Historical District is an interesting and culturally significant area to visit. Within this district are a large number of buildings with udatsu walls—raised walls built on either end of a building to prevent the spread of fires—dating back to the Edo and Meiji Periods (1603-1912). It is said that one could imagine the world of these periods due to the preserved merchant houses built wall to wall, lined along the streets for all to experience. The preservation district is designated by the government and is a rare sight in all of Japan. This area can also be seen through the gardens and cellars of the Kosaka Family Residence (designated as National Important Cultural Property) and Past Imai Family Residence (designated as Municipal Cultural Property). Take a stroll in the past and explore this designated district said to bring life back to Japan's grand history.
