Wat Huay Pla Kang is a unique temple perched on a hill top that somehow remains somewhat of a hidden gem in Chiang Rai despite its incredible beauty. The highlight is the massive Guan Yin statue, offering panoramic views from its 25-story height. It is absolutely HUGE! You will be able to see it from far away just when driving to the temple!

It is free to visit the grounds but if you want to take a lift up to the top of the statue it costs 40 baht.

BEST TIME TO GO: Sunrise! Not only will the temple grounds be deserted but since the sun rises right in front of the Guan Yin statue and the dragon steps, it is the absolute best time for photography and for seeing the place in its most magical light.

TIME: Opens at 7 am but I'm pretty sure you can enter earlier too. A friend told me that they were let in at 06:30 am. Plan around 1 hour here.

The big white statue is often mistaken for a big Buddha. However, it is actually Guan Yin, the smiling ‘Goddess of Mercy’, who blesses health and wealth upon visitors. 💛

Don't forget to explore the whole grounds! The white temple is not only pretty in itself with its white exterior and completely silver interior, it also offers a unique view of Guan Yin and the dragon steps!
