Agios Nikolaos, a charming coastal town, features white-washed houses and stunning architecture set against the backdrop of the sea. As the cosmopolitan capital of Lasithi, it has around 20,000 residents and is built on the site of ancient Mandraki, west of the Gulf of Mirabello. Its name comes from the Byzantine church of Saint Nikolaos nearby.

The city is located on the northeastern coast of Crete, is a vibrant yet laid-back town known for its picturesque harbor, beautiful beaches, and rich cultural heritage. The town is well-connected by public transport. The city is an excellent base for exploring the eastern region of the island.

One of Agios Nikolaos' highlights is its Archaeological Museum, where you can discover fascinating artifacts from Minoan to Roman times. Strolling through the town, you’ll find numerous shops selling local products, from traditional olive oil and honey to handmade ceramics and textiles.

During the day, Agios Nikolaos exudes a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a coffee by Lake Voulismeni or exploring the charming streets.

The town's highlight is Lake Voulismeni, a scenic lagoon in the center, used as a fishing harbor. Surrounded by myths, it is said to have extremely deep waters where the Germans dumped their war equipment before leaving Crete in 1944. A walk around the lake is a must.

As the evening approaches, the town becomes livelier, with more people gathering in its many tavernas, bars, and waterfront restaurants, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance.
