The Toplou Monastery is a historic site with a rich and eventful past. Founded in the 14th century, it has faced challenges such as pirate attacks, earthquakes, and even German occupation during World War II. The monastery is known for its fortified architecture, Byzantine icons, and collection of artifacts that reflect its role in shaping the history of Crete. Despite its turbulent history, Toplou remains an active monastery. There is a taverna/café on the site. The Monastery holds a museum with several old and religious objects. The Monastery is also producer of award winning wine and olive oil. For the wine lovers, they offer tastings at the monastery.
