Chora Sfakíon, or simply Sfakia, is a small town on Crete’s south coast, 74 km from Chania. As the capital of the rugged Sfakia region, it has around 300 residents and sits near the exit of the Imbros Gorge. The town has two harbors where ferries connect to Agia Roumeli, Loutro, and Gavdos, serving hikers from the Samaria Gorge.

Despite its size, Chora Sfakíon offers essential amenities, including tavernas, markets, a gas station, an ATM, a pharmacy, and transport links to Chania. Nearby, Vrissi Beach and other pebbly shores provide quiet spots to relax. Accommodations range from rooms to apartments, supporting a local economy based on tourism, fishing, olive oil, and livestock farming.

Historically, the town thrived under Venetian and Turkish rule, with a once-flourishing trade fleet. However, it suffered heavy bombing during the Battle of Crete. Chora Sfakíon is also known for its fierce resistance against both Venetian and Ottoman invaders, aided by the rugged White Mountains and rocky coastline. Nearby Anopolis was home to the legendary Cretan revolutionary, Daskalogiannis.

Access & Tips:

  • Access: The village is accessible via a scenic drive through dramatic gorges and mountain landscapes. Parking is available at the end of the road before the harbor, sometimes paid but affordable.
