Escape the crowds and discover one of the last truly wild stretches of Romania's coastline at Vadu Beach.
This isn't your typical resort scene; here, you'll find a vast, untouched expanse of fine sand meeting the clean waters of the Black Sea, all protected as part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. It is the classic Romanian "anti-seaside": no music booming from speakers, no lined-up sun loungers, no itinerant corn sellers, and, most importantly, no hotels right on the water's edge.
The adventure begins immediately after leaving Corbu commune. The asphalt road ends, and the famous road made of concrete slabs, worn down by time, begins, followed by a sandy and dusty dirt road through the fields.
The Reality: The road is bad. If you have a low car, you will drive at a snail's pace and grit your teeth at every pothole. If it has rained recently, the dirt road can become muddy.
The Feeling: You feel like you are heading to the end of the world. The landscape is arid, flat, typical of the Delta, with reeds and sun-dried vegetation.
The beach area is quiet. You only hear the sound of the waves and the wind. People who come here generally seek the same thing: privacy and peace. Tents and caravans are scattered at great distances from each other (although during peak weekends in August, it starts to get crowded here too).
Officially, camping on the beach is forbidden (as it is a Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve), although tolerated within certain limits in the areas behind the protective dune. There are also a few rustic guesthouses in Vadu village, but they are far from the beach (a few kilometers).
Vadu is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (ARBDD) so you need an access permit for the reserve (can be bought online or via SMS) and a car permit. Controls are frequent.
Vadu beach is for you if you love nature, want peace, are willing to give up comfort (toilet, shower), are logistically well-organized, and don't mind insects.
It’s the perfect spot for a quiet day of swimming, sunbathing, and simply reconnecting with nature.
