Catarata El Indio is a tall jungle waterfall located in the mountains of Puriscal, about 3.5 hours from San José. The waterfall drops roughly 120–150 meters into a lush canyon surrounded by dense forest, making it one of the most impressive hidden waterfalls in the region.

Reaching the waterfall requires a guided hike, since the trail crosses private land and rural farms before entering forest. The hike is roughly 6–7 km round trip and usually takes 3–4 hours total depending on pace and stops. Along the way you’ll pass open viewpoints, tropical forest, small rivers, and steep downhill sections before reaching the base of the waterfall. The final section of the trail can be steep and muddy, especially during the rainy season, but the view of the massive waterfall at the end makes it worth the effort.

Because the area is still relatively unknown, the hike feels very remote and untouched, and you’ll often hear birds and insects from the surrounding jungle while walking the trail.
TIP: It is highly recomended to go in rainy season so the waterfall is at its best, otherwise water levels can drop significantly. I would be in your best interest to hire a local tour gide for this adventure.
